"Cat in the Rain" Question on Theme

One of the key questions of theme is “Do characters have control over their lives?” Answer this question for the American wife. What does Hemingway suggest about her control and what can be stated about people (women) in general from this?

WOW! Why do you think that American wife is "illegal and untrained?" I am kind of being skirt as well, and know that only "illegaly trained" husband can say "Oh, shut up and get something to read". Can you imagine this sutuation being opposite? Probably, only very low percent of wifes can say it to their husbands. She does not ask for lavish life. She is asking only for understanding and participation in her life.

Hey guys,
I like the simile that Wal used in his comment. But I don’t agree with his opinion. I think what the American wife wanted is not “lavish life”. She just wanted her husband could pay attention to her. Maybe she felt bored and just wanted to talk to her husband. She just wanted to turn her husband’s attention from the book to her. Maybe she chose the worst topics between them in order to show her anger or dissatisfaction to her husband’s indifference. That’s normal. After people married, they took a lot of things for granted. They think they needn’t to show their love to their wives or husbands, because they think their wives or husbands know that. However, actually, if you never show your love to your partners, your partners will lose confidence in your relationship. Then your partners will do a lot of stupid things to test your love. Therefore, in my opinion, the American wife did all the things just in order to find the answer to this question: Do you still care me?
Note: Hi Brad, this comment is not my homework. I just want to express my opinion. Please check my homework in Question on Repetition. Thanks!

Wal: I'm glad you're feeling enlightened. Thanks to Tatyana and Michelle for your contributions.

My comments will come after the exercise is completed by all students, Wal. Thanks for your confidence in my opinions, however.
