Hi Wal,

Theme is *relevant* to a subject or topic found in any work of literature. You are right that, by looking at the fiction in detail, we can figure out what the author may have intended as a theme.

A "reversal of expectations" would be an irony, Wal.

When, for example, a nice person (in the beginning) turns out to be harmful, we might find a theme to do with how much we should trust (or not trust) those people who seem outwardly nice, but who are, for some reason, evil inside.
