The most critical conflict in this story is having two wide different characters in one family. And it is not George's fault. That is how he was created or grown in his family while being a child. He tries to take care of her, but his own way " Don't get wet", or "I will do it". Her life seems more important for him than he feelings. The problem is he can not watch deeper and wider. Do not forget that the difference between "can not" and "does not want" is huge. He loves her his own way, and probably, instead of looking out of the window she should help him with better understanding of her character.

The key conflict in the story results from George misunderstanding his wife’s true intention. George is not a thoughtful person. His wife often feels lonely due to George’s attitude. She attempts to attract her husband’s attention by making unnecessary comments. For example, she says “I want to pull my hair back tight and smooth". However, her attempts only arouse his anger.

The key conflict in the story is the duty and desire between the married couple. Hemingway quotes so many "I want" in the wife's speech. She shouldn't exaggerate the difficulties and inconveniences and should find her own amusement instead. Also, there's a great need for a respective space for the husband and wife. Marriage is to make concessions and not to impose your likes and dislikes upon your life partner.

The most important conflict is internal conflicts of the American wife. She has difficulties inside between her desire and reality. Although it is just symbolic example, she wants to change her hair style, but she doesn’t because her husband doesn’t want it. She has some desire to do something by herself but she can’t because she doesn’t have courage to do something by herself. Between her desire and her weakness personality, she conflicts. The wish that she wants to get the cat in the rain may be a kind of method to solve her conflict.
