"Cat in the Rain" Question on Character

One can compare the hotelkeeper with the husband. Compare the two men in one way and suggest a reason for Hemingway to include this comparison.

Wal's Answer

Ernest Hemingway describes Hotelkeeper as “ heavy face and big hand”, so she likes Hotelkeeper. Hotelkeeper honors her like a queen. Husband is a normal man: “ I like it the way it is.” George makes it easy for his wife to wear her hair without being braid. Here, Hemingway uses a comparison directly to tell us that sometimes women love men with immense muscles and height.

Yes, sometimes women love men with muscules and height, but only at the first look. I think that Signora (American wife)is a type of women who after her first look does emidiate second. Understanding and absence of frigidity makes her happy ! And, unfortunately, her husband is "very normal" man.

Comparing these two men’s attitude to her, I think the American wife would like the hotelkeeper more because “ he wanted to serve her.” I believe that Hemingway used this comparison to stir up a fire of unsatisfactioriness in her heart and lead to conflicts.

Hemingway has his characters stopping at the hotel where they were the only two Amerians. Outside their window, the war monument, the sea, and the rain intensified loneliness for the wife, the protagonist. The environment impacted on her emotions, reflecting that she was neglected by her husband. This influenced her desire to rescue the "Cat in the Rain."

The Hotelkeeper's maner was suit for the American wife, who liked to be served: "He sent the maid to holde the umbrella for her." His job might try to catch a customer's attention to come back the hotel. Who knows? If she was his wife, it must be another thing. I saw that George was a model husband. He offered to get the cat in the rain for her, and likes the way her hair was. If George wasn't a sweet and ramantic husband, he wouldn't have taken her for a vacation at the brilliant hotel.
