"Cat in the Rain" Question on Atmosphere
Hemingway creates a strong atmosphere in the story. Give an example of one way he creates atmosphere and suggest one reason why he has created it for “Cat in the Rain.”
In the scene of the prologue,Hemingway created a dreary atmosphere. "Only two Americans", "They did not know any of the people", "No artist in the garden", "It was raining", "cars were gone", The war monument", "Empty square", and "A crouched cat under the dripping green table"... Through such a lonely and murky atmosphere, Hemingway dropped a hint: the depressed mood and the boresome life are not from the bright days. The description of atmosphere is the grey backround of a neglected wife. The lonely American wife was seeking the cat in the rain for healing her loneliness. This act shows her disappointment about her husband. Her heart is just like a empty square. Undoubtedly, the wandering cat is also her miniature.
The rain, the sea, “only two Americans,” and “ the empty square” created a still and dreary atmosphere. Without distracting activities, a living cat grasped the woman’s attention and readers’ eyes spontaneously. In this way, readers were led by Hemingway to focus on the ordinary conversations between these characters.
Hemingway has his characters stopping at the hotel where they were the only two Amerians. Outside their window, the war monument, the sea, and the rain intensified loneliness for the wife, the protagonist. The environment impacted on her emotions, reflecting that she was neglected by her husband. This influenced her desire to rescue the "Cat in the Rain."
Former adult teacher who loves island beaches. Happy homebody and family man; once devoted dog owner, now without Tashi, my Tibetan Terrier. I prefer the absurdity of the imagination to the absurdity of imagining nothing.
