Scene 3, question 4

After Tom’s coat strikes against the shelf of the glass menagerie, Laura’s crying causes Tom’s awareness about the points of similarity between Laura and her collection. They both are fragile, vulnerable and easily damaged. Also his reaction to the fallen glass is a hint to indicate his feelings to his sister. In the movie version of the play, we see how carefully he picks up the glass. His anger has gone immediately, and his sympathetic concern for Laura is emerged from his eyes. The consciousness about Laura’s condition makes the conversation about gentleman callers between Tom and Amanda possible in scene four. Furthermore, it pushes Tom to invite a young man to have a dinner with them at last. (119 words)

Scene 6, Question 4

Amanda displays quite a bit of honesty while having her conversations with Jim. She seems to be trying to win over Jim for her daughter, but I don’t think she’s doing it the right way. Maybe she was just excited, but she was enjoying telling Jim all sorts of personal things about her past life, jumping from story to story. It seems that in this case of Amanda wanting Jim for her daughter, they are playing complete opposite roles, it should be Laura making all the conversation with Jim, instead of her mother. She’s trying to make Laura look good when she says, “it’s rare for a girl as sweet an’ pretty as Laura to be domesticated!,” but at the same time she can’t stop talking about herself. As the scene ends she continues jumping from topic to topic about her past life, not even giving Jim a chance to talk.

Scene 6, Question 2

Amada didn't expect that her frock induced a dramatic irony. While she
is putting on the frock,in which she attracted young callers many years ago, she said to Laura:" I'm going to make a spectacular appearance!" She continuously said:
"Something I've resurrected from
that old trunk! Style haven't changed so terribly much after all." Later, She gaily raises her skirt and does a minicing step excitedly around the room. She believes that
her fancy frock will attract the gentleman caller like many years ago. Unexpectedly, her girlish "spectacular appearance" really shocked the young men. Jim stares at her with little blinks, and Tom is very embarrassed.
This damatic irony transfers the focus from Laura's shyness to Amanda's memory about youth, and Laura seems to be forgotten, but A suspense about Laura is produced.
Also, because of this suspense,
an atmosphere is created, it makes
audiences more concerned about Laura. Furthermore, behind the dramatic irony, Laura's increasing
tension and nervousness is consealed, which triggles the climax of the play due to Laura's
giddiness. So, the design of dramatic irony about Laura's frock is vital in the play.

The feedback for Scene 3, Question 1

The topic sentence is not clear. Tatyana doesn’t define or describe the grievances between Tom and Amanda. The topic sentence should have stated the greivances between Tom and Amanda which developed into a heated argument to the point where they appeared to lose control and said things in anger.

No quotes were used.

Our group agreed with the conclusion sentence; however, we think the answer is too general for scene three.

There is a spelling error. The last word of the second sentence should be build, not built.
The last sentence of the second line should read. She always has her own ideas on how to build things to make the most ideal situation for her.

I agree with Emilia's reaction and make an aditionnal comment on it.

The narrator reveals his inmost thoughts and feelings, and spontaneously he transmits vicarious feeling. Therefore, we are persuaded to react to experiences which are familiar to us in our everyday life. From there, the narrator arouses our feelings of pity, sorrow, and compassion for Laura, including Tom, in which innocent charactors suffer through no fault of their own. However, the first-person point of view is limited, since we are told by one of the characters in his own words and only what this character knows and observes, a prejudice against Amanda, who is a difficult one, is unavoidable.

Emilia wrotes "By using our complicity," I think the use of 'complicity' is wrong here.

feedback for scene 3 question 4

I think Phoebe describes well the significance of the symbol.
Before Tom strikes the glass animals, maybe he doesn’t realize
his sister’s problems well, of course he knows the problems, but after
this accident, he has more sympathetic concern for Laura. This concern
may lead Tom to invite a gentleman caller. I agree her opinions.

Spring Ritual
When mentioning the spring ritual, I can’t help to produce some wonderful pictures about the appreciative meeting in TCL group. When I worked in TCL, I participated this significant convention every year. It’s usually held in March every year. Since there are more than 70,000 employees and 40 branch companies in entire TCL Group, only those people whose titles aren’t lower than manager of any departments are qualified to attend this conference.
On 18th of March last year, I wore of my highest quality and latest style suit and drove to the meeting venue----the biggest theatre in Shenzhen. On my way to theatre, I heard birds singing and saw willow waving to me. After parking my car, I hurried to the gate of the theatre without paying attention various advertisements around the theatre.
“How are you? Susan” Jeff shrieked with exhilarated voice and expression. I just stretched out my hands and shook hands with him firmly. “We are late, let’s go over there to greet to our president, Dongsheng Li, and other directors.” In fact, this is the best opportunity to establish a good impression in TCL Group directorate. So majority people attending this meeting will arrive there early.
After complimenting with our leaders or potential leaders, Jeff and I went into the theatre shoulder by shoulder. When we passed through the ticket door, there were two rows gorgeous girls wearing cheongsam on either sides of the door, and one guard with gentle smile stood there to check guest’s ticket.
As sooner as we sat down, we heard that one group of people who worked in TCL Mobile Phone Company shouted together: “developing the best products, providing the best service, and establishing best brand”. Every two minutes, another group of people followed up shouting their own company slogans. The scene is really inspiring.
It was meeting time. The presider announced: lady and gentleman please be quiet. Within half minute, the entire theatre was soundless like an empty room. Then the presider said, “Stand up, everyone please, please play the Anthem of Republic of China. ------ Please sit down”. Then according the agenda of the meeting, the first item was the president of TCL Group gave an annual report about the TCL operating situation last year. The second item was vice-president announced the list name of appreciated employees. The third was acclaimed employees went up toward the stage and received their certification and bonus. The forth item was one of rewarded employees made a speech on the behalf of all appreciated employees. And the last item was all of the general managers, who work in respectively different companies, went up to sign their own company task that they have to fulfill next year with the president. The most interesting thing was when the presider announced the numeral such as TCL TV: turnover will be $1.4 billions, then I heard thunder applause, but when presider mentioned TCL Telephone: turnover will be $5 millions, then the applause hardly could be heard. When all items finished, the presider declared, “Stand up, please everybody, “please play the Song of TCL.” Then everybody sang the song loudly. When singing the song, I felt some warm tear flowing down my chin because had to leave TCL for Canada. I missed TCL because I worked there for more than 15 years. With exciting mood, I squinted Jeff; his eyes are glistening with tear.
Both of us are grateful TCL because we obtained various opportunities to practice and our abilities were enhanced in TCL. So we believed wherever we go, we can make good use of our capabilities.
