Using Literary Elements to Compare Stories

Put your examples of three different literary elements that occur in both stories (as a comparison) as comments to this post. Each student in the group is responsible for a single example.

Remember to make your comparison based on, for example, how effective it is (you may decide that each story uses the element equally effectively but be sure to explain why you think that).

I enjoy the irony of Uncle Khosrove's unusual behaviour more than the more serious ironies in "The Possibility of Evil." Khosrove makes me laugh. How can we take seriously a man who says "It is no harm" when his house is burning down? Jackson's Miss Strangeworth delights in incurring the maximum pain in her victims. Calling a baby an "IDIOT CHILD"? This a clearly more serious use of irony, but in my heart, I'd rather laugh with Khosrove!—78 words

Saroya uses flashback to show uncle Khosrove’s personality vividly. When Khosrove heard his house was on fire, he still said, “It is no harm; pay no attention.” However, Canfield Fisher uses flashback to tell the story of an ailing, crippled but energetic, hyperactive gran’ther, in complete contrast to the young assistant’s obsession and depression.

Don Crane (The Possibility of Evil) and John Byro (The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse), both got hurt by the main characters’ decisions. Unlike John Byro’s generosity and calmness, Don took a brutal revenge: “LOOK OUT AT WHAT USED TO BE YOUR ROSES.” Although Don became happy for a short while by hurting Miss Strangeworth and destroyed the all remained possibilities for friendship, John Byro gained respect and friendship beside his better-tempered horse.

Canfield Fisher and Shirley Jackson presented the two different type of conflict in their stories; one is inspiring while the other one is full of hatred and enmity. Pendleton’s struggles ,especially on that hot summer day, was prove of his fight for happiness and having more fun without hurting other people. However, Miss Strangeworth exerted to destroy other people life by sending them her harmful letters.

Although at the beginning of the two stories “The Summer of Beautiful White Horse” and “The Heyday of the Blood”, we think of the points of view as being different, both the stories are actually told in the first person “I”. The difference is that “I”, Aram narrates his story directly whereas Professor Mallory tells a story about his grandfather through the first person within another story.

Mallory’s great-grandfather in “The Heyday of The Blood” verses himself and a man. The old man wants to enjoy his life, but his physical condition and his grandson prevent him for doing what he wants.
In “The Summer of The Beautiful White Horse”, Mourad verses his society. He likes to keep the horse, but at the same time, his family and relatives teach him the meaning of mistake.
Although the two conflicts are strongly done, however, the first one is less complex than the second one. Mourad’s stealing of horse just for ride, makes me think well before I judge that he is a thief.

The both authors of “The Heyday of the Blood” and “The Possibility of Evil” foreshadow in their stories. Jackson hints that Miss Strangeworth leads another secret life in the story, which arouses my curiosity to know Miss Strangeworth’s secret life. Similarly, Canfield foreshadows that Professor Mallory‘s story is going to be about his Gran’ther. Even though both writers foreshadow in their stories, Jackson’s way of foreshadowing intrigues me the most because she foreshadows directly whereas Canfield uses a dialogue.

Through their characters Granther and the farmer, both authors deliver the audience the same world view, which is that people are basically good. But I enjoy the description of the farmer much more. The farmer believes his heart instead of eyes although he almost can tell the horse is his. He would rather to believe the horses are twins. The farmer makes us think much more than the granther who is very kind to people.

The plot of “The Possibility of Evil” and “The Summer of Beautiful White Horse” both reach to a climax in the end of the story. In William Saroyan’s story, the horse was finally returned; it is more predictable result. Shirley Jackson mentioned the roses in the story for more than ten times, and it draws reader's attention to the mysterious roses. The final destruction of them reaches a perfect climax in the end. I prefer the later; it is rather dramatic.

Both authors of “The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse” and “The Possibility of Evil” world view were believable. Shirley Jackson’s presentation about Miss Strangeworth was negative but dramatic and I enjoyed it. Unlike William Saroyan’s
presented the innocent kids which lead to a positive impact. Over all, the authors view successfully about the people’s behavior was basically good and has forgiving heart.

Comparison of two story
The plot of "The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse" and"The Possibility of Evil" has contrast resolution. First one shows everyone is happy at the end. Mourad and Aram are happy because they returned horse to the owner without trouble and John Byro delighted his horse has come back with stronger and better tempered condition.
But Miss Strangeworth of "The Possibility of Evil" has cried at the end because her valuable rose garden was destroyed.

In both “The Possibility of Evil” and “The Headay of The Blood”, writer uses irony. Miss Strangeworth was described as a friendly, respectable and kindly old lady at first, but we found that she actually did something terrible. Also, for granther, his action is not expected as what an old, sick and weak person should do. In my opinion, the irony of Miss Strangeworth is stronger, because it makes me more surprised and shocked when I read it.

The story " The Possibility of Evil" tells us that the person who has evil eyes, only sees the evil side and could effect other people to do an another evil things. The story's main charactor has a clean outlook, however inside her mind is very repugnance. The story "The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse" tells us that stealing could make hard problems to the victims and lose a conscience to the assaulter. The story makes a realization about the stealing is bad thing. Both stories are meaningful, however "The Possibility of Evil" managed more negetive way(harmful) and "The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse" managed mroe possitive way(harmless)
