My Experience with Poetry

Write a 50-word paragraph that refers to your personal experiences with poetry. The experiences do not have to be at school, although they may be if you wish. Be specific please. Post your work and remember to bring your printed work to class along with a printed copy of your chosen poem.

To help you find a poem, here are three online sources of quality poetry. You must find a poem from one of these three sources. Remember that you will need to defend the poem's quality in group work that day, so be sure to choose well.

Poems at Slate.com (each poem is read by the poet; a good way to decide if you like the way it sounds)

Canadian Poetry Online (from the University of Toronto library; a list of poets that links to poems from each one)

Poetry Daily Archive (alphabetical archive of poems by title; here you can look for an interesting title and see if you can find a poem you like)

Poetry, with laser-like efficiency, penetrates more deeply into my heart than any other literature. I love its unique ability to make me feel. Reading two or three poems a week is a balm for my soul. Without poetry, my life would be barren, my spirit unfed.

Experience of Poetry
Poetry, for me, like a breath of fresh air, bring me delight and relaxing when I read them while I am tired or pretty annoying. Reading them give me a feeling of enjoying a cute girl covered with an elegant dressing without anything burden.(44)

Understanding poetry has not been easy because poets often use vague and puzzling style of writing.
At first this has turned me off to poetry however, poetries unique rhythm and rhyming caught my interest and I am now considering poetry as part of my learning experience.

My soul wakes up happily every time I hear poetry. My spirit enjoys the beautiful touching of the words that conceive such a piece of art. I cannot image my life without it, my soul will be into deep darkness and words won’t have meaning in my life.

Distant want
by Jeffrey Skinner
I’d like to be chancellor because of the sound
I’d like to nestle in a child-blue blanket
I’d like to forgive, but forget who
I’d like to think no one spectacular

I’d like to save up nonsexual thoughts
I’d like a quiver of thoughts
I’d like some extra hot sauce, please
I’d like the drama to come to a musical end

I’d like a tad more Manhattan
I’d like revenge for something, something!
I’d like flowers for the conflagration
I’d like to keep the broken helmet

Aging, I dare more for less
May I wear your necklace to the void?

Poetry, very often, is hard to understand if we followed just literal meaning of every single word. However, if we let that letters and words play a game with our soul, but without any control of structure, every word gets unique, deep, and personal meaning. It is a true magic.

I enjoy reading a poem. With restricted number of words and distinctive sentence
formats, poets convey their thoughts, ideas, feelings and emotions in their poetry even
precisely, vividly and genuinely, without any redundancy but powerful enough to
arise resonance, like echo in a valley lingering in my mind.

Poetry, for me is a huge ocean on a sunny day with blue and clear water. Poetry makes me feel happy and relaxed when I read it, especially when I have lost hope. Poetry is one of the necessary tools for my soul. Without
poetry my life would be a desert. -51 words

Actually I do not like poem, because I cannot enjoy it. I can not to understand it. I have to master English first before I can enjoy poem, but in Indonesian language I can enjoy Indonesian poem because I grew up in Indonesian culture. However I hope later on I can learn how to enjoy poem

When I was a secondary school student, Poetry charmed me so much that I read nearly all Chinese classical poems, especially Song poetry; till now, I can recite hundreds of Song poems which I was favorite. I liked beautiful rhythm of Song Poetry with a touch of sadness. On the other hand, as a teenage boy, I hoped to draw attention of my first lover with sentimental sentences in my letters.

My opinion

I read the poem which was chosen by Jovana, “Live with me on earth under the invisible daylight moon”. Normally, everyone has his/her own reason for the favourite. To me, the first factor mostly is the title which maybe attract me to read it. So, I think, Jovana also likes its long, clear and romantic title. The second reason of Jovana’s choice is its easy reading – it is short and without too much strange vocabularies while the poem has some short lines across within long sentences. additionally, when I read it, I felt the words of the poem just like a romantic lyric talking about a young beautiful lady’s emotion. I guess Jovana got a romantic sense from the poem, so she chose it as her favourite one. Anyway, there are three reasons I guess for Jovana’s choice of the poem: title, rhyme, and sense.
