Here's a useful definition of persuasion from a psychological perspective:
According to Perloff (2003), persuasion can be defined as "...a symbolic process in which communicators try to convince other people to change their attitudes or behaviors regarding an issue through the transmission of a message in an atmosphere of free choice."
So, given a"free choice," what have you found most persuasive in the two lectures (Connected, but alone? and Why privacy matters) and one reading, "Growing Up Digital, Wired for Distraction"? Refer to each lecture and to the reading in your answer.
Write no more than 200 to 250 words. It is likely easiest to refer to the lectures and reading in separate short paragraphs. If you remain unconvinced by their ideas, please try to persuade us by providing an argument against the ideas. Be sure to say why you find something persuasive (or why not). I will provide a sample this weekend.
Bring all your writing, word processed and double spaced, to class next Wednesday.

Sherry Turkle says that, “Human relationships are rich and they’re messy and they’re demanding. And we clean them up with technology.” For me, this is the most persuasive part of her talk. Part of what makes us ourselves is in the “conversation” she refers to. My work as a teacher involves lots of messy conversation. It isn’t always obvious what needs to be done (or said), so I treasure the moments where a conversation with a student leads to an effective change.—82 words
For me, the most persuasive part of Allessandro Acquisti’s talk was when he showed us how “Discrimination was happening through social media for equally skilled candidates,” using a photo of a woman with a child. I know through my wife’s occupation as Human Resources Manager that she is not allowed to ask if a woman has children, or has plans to have children. That would be intruding on her charter right to privacy. Employers can now ignore these rights by searching through social media.—84 words
Matt Richtel quotes a teacher saying, “students now lack the attention span to read the assignments on their own.” This is a change I have also observed in my 30 years as a teacher. I would not state it quite so unequivocally, however. Many, I would say, have difficulty reading deeply. Digital media that “teaches” us to expect instant gratification makes assigning longer readings a challenge.—66 words

Sherry Turkle quoted “I got a text from my daughter before the show mom you will rock” this was really important to me because it’s true sometimes a text means like a warm hug or sometimes like getting a slap in the face. We let a simple text control our emotion isn't it weird a sentence “mom you will rock” made her feel like she got a hug. I agree with her to some extent because texting sometimes helps us to communicate or connect much easier and quicker. -88 words
The most persuasive part in “Why privacy matters” by Allessandro Acquisti was an image of someone posting a status and they checked their privacy setting and it said ‘friends and NSA’. It shows that anything we say online can be seen by ‘NSA’. A friend of mine was nearly getting hired at Microsoft, but they did a research on him there was an image of him in a party, which gave the company a reason not to hire him. Allessandro is telling us be careful on what we say and do someday it will be used against us. -98 words-
The short story “Growing Up Digital, Wired for Distraction” by Matt Richtel was really interesting, there was a part where it made me to stop and think. His mother went back to work, and he got a computer. He became “increasingly engrossed in games and surfing the internet” which easily tells us that it’s her moms fault for his “F’s” on his report card for getting him a computer. I've noticed that many parents buy their child digital device when they are really young and yet worry why they are not focusing on school. -94 words-
Sherry Turkle states “We’re lonely but we’re afraid of intimacy”. “The illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship” She explains to us about how we use technology to feel connected to others in our own comfortable way. I believe that, that is very true for the most part because it makes us constantly feel connected to people wherever we are and where ever they may be without having to personally interact with one another. – 81 words
I thought the most persuasive part of,“Why Privacy Matters”, by Alessandro Acquisti is when he compares two images of the same lady but one holding a bag, and the other holding a baby. He states about how someone’s personal life can affect your employee rights, as simple as a picture. I remember my mom telling me how difficult it was to seek for work while she was pregnant, she could tell how judgmental people were, by refusing to take her resume, even with having her full degree. It’s sad to see how discrimination affects us more today by all the social media. – 100 words
Growing Up Digital, Wired For Distraction by Matt Richtel, Vishal Quotes “I realized there were choices,” “ Homework wasn’t the only option”, It reminded me of my computers course, I remember looking around the class to see that 85% of students were either browsing through the internet or logging onto their facebook’s. In a classroom environment I believe it would help students pay attention and learn easier if the internet use was strictly prohibited until after class inquiries

I agree with the views of Sherry Turkle. People of this generation have lots of problems with being overly attached to technology. This causes them to “be together, while not being together”. Relying on technology means we have the ability to rephrase, and gather our thoughts prior to responding to one another. This means we do not practice the social skill to communicate with each other face to face. I also agree with hugging and talking to our friends and family “face to face” is good for our personal behavior development, because we’d be able to see each other as who they really are instead of who they seem to be. ---111 words
“Privacy is not about having something negative to hide” is the most persuasive part of Alessandro Acquisti’s talk for me. I always believe maintaining personal space is necessary. It does not benefit us to have our personal information available to strangers. ---41 words
Our society is playing with cooperation, so we need more people who have different skill in our society such as Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, and Temple Grandin, for they can make our lives more colorful. I agree that the heavy use of gadgets would be harmful to the young people causing them to be distracted. I believe if we provide a learning environment of devices as Mr. Reilly introduced the audio course, it would regain their attention and save many young people. Redirecting them to use the media devices to gain more knowledge is an important life lesson. ---98 words

The most persuasive part of Sherry Turkle's lecture for me was, "We sacrifice conversation for mere connection. We short-change ourselves." There's no doubt that technological advances have made us more informed, more connected people. However I question whether it is the "real" connection between "real" people without pretending. Certainly people became very close to technology, but we;re still lonely, and we afraid that we'll never have satisfying relationships. -67
In Alessandro Acquisti's talk, he says, "Privacy, in a way, is both the means and the price to pay for freedom." Presumably, what is meant this is that we can freely use supplied contents from giant companies, such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter, and it seems every things are for free very kindly, but there's no such thing as a free contents. They also require and extract the important informations from us, and it's pretty cunning, so we are just unaware of it.

Matt Richtel quotes Mr. Diesel saying "If Vishal's going to be an independent filmmaker, he's got to read Vonnegut." I've thought why he adds these words. Probably he has some doubts about his a new type of class, even though he is confident to say that we must use technology to solve this problem. I think, that's only a temporary measure, not the fundamental solution for the problem. Eventually, we shouldn't overlook reading of real books, and computer will never replace that kind of knowledge. So we need to find other ways to get close with books for students.

SheryTurkle mentioned in her speech that, “Our little devises in our pockets are so psychologically powerful that they don’t only change what we do, they change who we are.” This is the most persuasive part of her talk, because it is a message that we are moving from originally designed human beings to live together to the slaves of technology. This is the prediction of our future if we don’t learn how to use technology more for our well-being, instead of distraction. -82 words
“… the game has been designed and rigged so that they cannot care about privacy, and coming to the realization that these manipulations occur is already halfway through the process of being able to protect yourself.” This is the most persuasive part of Allessandro Acquisti’s talk because it makes me think about of my online accounts and passwords. It brings me to question myself: Am I exposing my privacy to much? Yes. If somebody asked me why, I wouldn’t know. -80words
The most persuasive part in Matt Richtel’s article is “He’s a kid caught between two worlds, one virtual and one with real-life demands.” This is a reality which most high school children are dealing with, not even realizing there’s something wrong with that. Society still doesn’t have right answer how to solve the problem of overusing technology in spite of using talents and abilities. -64 words

Sherry Turkle mentioned in her lecture that "the wish which people want to have more development in technology, for the phrase "no one is listening", reflects to a painful truth". for me,that was the most persuasive part of her talk. I felt she is absolutely right, as well as the truth. People can not forget the real conversations and believe on, there is no one who will listen to me ,and go for more improvement in technology. More development in technology on helping a machine listen, feel, and talk to us, equals to we talk to ourselves.
For me, the most interesting and persuasive part of Allessandro Acquisti's talk was when he explained about how privacy matter even when you are looking for employments . I believe and I know there are some companies who look for more information of their employees, online, to see how they behave in online net workings. Thousand of employees , in big companies, been fired and lost their jobs , because of their misbehaving and posting not suitable pictures, in online net working.
Refer to the short story, "Growing up Digital", by Matt Richtel, I believe our younger generations are more into the technology than our old or adult generation. In a part of the story i realized Technology effect younger age's education as well as their mind and attitude. For instant, Vishal, a student, who prefer computer than anything else.
Sherry Turkle’s article about today’s technology; how we expect more from technology and less from each other, fascinated me in many ways. Technology has taken over our social lives and made us ubiquitous. We are lost in the world of social networking and these modern technologies. We can’t go to sleep without having our phone beside us or using it until we fall asleep. This is a problem for the new generation; they can’t make an effective real life conversation because they never learned, how to. From the time they were in middle school, they were used to cellphones and online media.

Allesandro Acquisti said, “Our information is collected by organizations” surprises me how everything we share online is being tracked down by NSA. There are technologies that can compare a picture of someone with other pictures online and detect the potential face matches. We should be extremely careful what we share online on social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and etc. because later on it might be used against us. I have researched that most of the universities and employers search up their applicants name online prior to accepting them. Overall, we should limit what we share online.

Sam Crocker said, “I know I can read a book, but then I’m up and checking Facebook.” It’s scary how our new generation is extremely distracted by online social media and games. They can’t focus on their school and academics because they prefer the immediate gratification. They can get a whole 200 pages book in a 6 minute YouTube video. This method can decrease their writing and reading skills. Their social conversation changed to a world of abbreviation and their brains are wired in front of screens. Overall, world of social media has distracted many peoples life and their ability to focus.

Sherry Turkle quotes, “People want to control exactly the amount of attention they give others, not too much, not too little.” This “Goldilocks Effect” was the most persuasive part in her talk to me because it related to my life. The example of the mid-age businessman about his “plugged-in lives” at the work made me feel guilty because I am also “the one who don’t want to be interrupted” when I am busy with my emails. Sometimes I can’t control what I say with face-to-face conversation, so I rather chose technology to keep the relationship of my friends “not too close, not too far, but just right”. –107 words
The most persuasive part in Allessandro Acquisti’s lecture was the face matching during the student online survey. This evidence reminded me that two years ago I tried to find my best friend’s photo by typing her name on the google search, and then in just a few seconds, my friend’s photos popped out on the image section. At the time, I found that was amazing but also scared because it really lacked of privacy. That’s why Acquistis said, “Any personal information can be sensitive information”. -89 words
In Matt Richtel’s article, the part that the overuse media has a negative effect on the young boys’ brains persuaded me. It’s true that these “cool lures” give the youth instant gratification. However, their addiction on multitasking causes their developing brains become “habituated to distraction” and not to focus on school. As parent, I found that the most important thing is to guide our children to live healthily in our digital lives. --75 words

Sherry Turkle says that, ”We all need to focus on the way, many ways technology can lead us to our lives, our own bodies ,our own communities and our own planet.” For me, this is the most persuasive part of her talk. The part of her suggestion is how to manage technology in to our lives equally. I use text to connect with my husband on a busy day. Sometimes, we forget to say good bye before go to work. It’s simple that it comforts our balanced life. -88 words
For me, the most persuasive part of Alessandro Acquisti states that,” Big data and social media are not just a paradise”.I agree with him ; they’re just pretending to be friends with us – they’re actually spy. Last month, I installed the InstaFrame to my Iphone when I use it ,I often see the advertisements are running on my screen. Remember?, the parents’ warning ,”Don’t accept anything from strangers”. It still works as an adulthood. I’m aware of it. -78 words
Matt Richtel quotes the principal, David Reilly, says “To a degree , I’m using technology to do it”. I agree with his statement. To live in a digital world, we need to upgrade the material and go along with it. This is a clever way to get students’ attention and to see theirs successes .It’s obvious for us, our teacher , Mr. Brad, who invited us to join his blogger and we share our work to each other. The media devices and creative teachers present the interested lessons to learners. -89 words

Sherry Turkle I agree with her because she when she got a text before her show she was really happy and that made her feel better. When I get an text from someone I like and they telling me something good I always feel good and that little text message makes my whole day. This shows that texting is really important in our life because we can make someone feel better even thought were not with them at the moment and show them that we care about them.

The most persuasive part in “Why privacy matters” by Allessandro Acquisti was when he told us in future our privacy is our freedom and by that he means that we have to sell our privacy if we want to have freedom. This will help the government know more then we know about ourselves and to control us. Another important thing was that we have to think before posting something online because the government is watching us.

The short story “Growing Up Digital, Wired for Distraction” by Matt Richtel was really interesting because he showed us how people buy digital devices for their kids at a very young age. This can hurt the child eyes and make the kid feel unwanted because his parents are not around them as much, and he will grow up having communication problems and getting along with other kids around him. This can cause a lot of problem that is why parents have to starting playing with their kids instead of giving them digital devices. --93 Words--

KIRSTYN BONAR WHAT PERSUADES US?? NOVEMBER 12
A very persuasive part of Sherry Turkle’s TED talk was when she said these devices “give the illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship.” I didn’t look at it from this perspective before. This stood out to me and was quite persuasive because it was simply very true. I didn’t realize the devices were so much bigger than what we see them as. More often than not I have realized myself relying on the digital connection to provide me with the satisfaction I can clearly only get from in life contact with a human.

Alessandro Acquisti was quite persuasive in the sense he showed research and was very informative and factual. I was quite persuaded by him simply because he was so informative. What stood out most to me was the facial recognition and the research he had done to to go it. I really didn’t realize how sharp technology is even beyond what I thought. When I he showed me how prestige the technology is and what it can do it persuaded me to reconsider my privacy and its importance.

Matt Richtel chose to talk of real life experiences which allowed me to apply a lot of what he was talking about to myself. What was persuasive to me was the school saw technology and its changing effects on school and the students. When they saw the interference between technology and homework, they analyzed it, came up with a plan, and applied a new way of teaching and learning. They persuaded me to think there is a way to balance technology and real life by showing me with
functioning proof.

I was listening to the Sherry Turkle’s lecture with a grain of salt because I do not believe the
problem is so huge. Nevertheless, there was a part persuaded me to think about using
technologies more seriously. I mean the shot where the parents are texting message while their
children make a complaint and the phrase, “If we don’t teach our children to be alone, they will
only know how to be lonely”. As parents we should involve our children into social acts and
communication by serving ourselves as an example. It is only way to save them from social
isolation because new tech offer kids too many amusing things to persuade them to be lonely.

I have never cared about privacy in the Internet but I was too impressed by the part of
Alessandro Acquisti’s speech where he told about the opportunities to influence on our solutions,
the experiment where some organization creates advertise based on “facial composite” of your
best friends to make you buy something and you “will not even know that is happening”. It’s
terrified how easy somebody can manipulate with our subconscioness. I was persuaded that
sacrificing a piece of comfort offering by new technologies is not steep price for “autonomy and
freedom”.

Most of all I was persuaded by the part “The Lure of Distraction” in the Matt Ritchel’s article that
describes the influence of computer games and surfing the Internet on the development of
children brain. The scientist revealed playing video games “lead to markedly slower sleep quality”
and “huge stimulus”, the media which are, harm the abilities to remember vocabulary words and
keep attention on one assignment. I think this information proved by scientist facts should make
us think about negative effects of over indulgence using the Internet for saving our kids.
