My Experience with Poetry; Choosing a Poem

Write a 50-word paragraph that refers to your personal experiences with poetry. The experiences do not have to be at school, although they may be if you wish. Be specific please. Bring your printed work to class along with a printed copy of your chosen poem.

You must choose your poem from one of these three online sources of quality poetry. Remember that you will need to defend the poem's quality in group work that day, so be sure to choose well.

Poems at Slate.com (each poem is read by the poet; a good way to decide if you like the way it sounds)

Canadian Poetry Online (from the University of Toronto library; a list of poets that links to poems from each one)

Poetry Daily Archive (alphabetical archive of poems by title; here you can look for an interesting title and see if you can find a poem you like)

Poetry, with a laser-like efficiency, penetrates more deeply into my heart than any other form of literature. I love its unique ability to make me realize that, yes, I also feel that way. Reading two or three poems a week is a balm for my soul. Without poetry, life would be barren.

My experience with poetry is very limited. I think I prefer rhymes over poems, they have a different more cheerful rhythm. Most of the poems I was looking at on the suggested websites made me lugubrious, and I did not enjoy that. I hope I can broaden my horizon in the next few weeks.

My experience with poetry was/is like watching “Modern Art” – in the sense I can’t sometimes understand it. I like how some poems can be short, yet unbelievably powerful, and those (poems) that have hidden message that I can see. I love poetry that I can relate to, but lose interest when is hard to understand. The poem is the poet's canvas to express himself, but reader is the interpreter.

I love to read poems because it conveys a lot of meaning in just a few words. It also helps me to see the world according to the poet’s vision. Sometimes by reading poems I feel calm, peaceful and away from worries for a while. For me poetry is a kind of paint brush which can fill the colors of happiness in my life.

Poetry with rhythmical composition and limited words is like an ocean - so deep. It’s hard to reach, but when I tried to get to the bottom, I found fascination. Made me wonder how talented is the writer. Poetry is like reading story with a tune. It pierced deep into my soul.

In my experience, beautiful poetry is similar to music. It touches the string of my heart deeply, enriches my soul, and its powers are planted firmly inside of mine. I like poems that are themed about life because it evokes my imagination to bring me to another mental state where I am at peace.

Poetry is a picture builds scenes through my mind when I read it. Sometimes the rhythms and the tones acts like a song. I can also learn many literature languages from the poem. However, I don’t fully love it; I think I can’t understand the real deep meaning inside the writer’s mind represented in only a few words.

My experience with poetry is an enigma. I in general like reading poetry; it gives me an insight of the person who wrote the poem. However, if the poet has layers and layers to peel to reveal the meaning of the poem, then I just give up on the poem and the poet. Although I quite enjoy puzzles, I do have a limit.

I listened to poetry from the first years of my life; my mother and grandmother told it me. First time it was children's poetry, later I read the great Russian poets myself and enjoyed their syllable, rhyme, and impressive language. I like poetry; it is special language to express people's emotions and filings.

I can say that I used to like poetry. When I was a romantic teenager, I liked to read beautiful poems. Russian literature is reach with poetry. Also I used to memorize many poems at school. It was a good brain gym. I am not quite familiar with modern poetry, even though I have a friend, who is a poet when he is not an editor.

Poem is the distillation of life. Poets do not care about details. They displayed such verbal riches to show off their feelings. I enjoyed reading poem. It seems to take a dip in this sea of literature. Some kind of poems have very strict format to be follow. I like to write that kind of poem to practice my skills of writing. It is also like a I.Q test.

My experiences with poetry depend on the language. I was introduced with childlike poem: in kindergarten and grade one (in Iran); -easy. In elementary, high school: depth on meaning- I had to memorize and describe reaction (in Russia). I have challenge with poem: the language makes it sophisticated (in Canada).

Poetry calms me down and feeds my soul. While reading poems, I get lost in the depth of my thoughts; I imagine myself up in space flying and dancing with the meaning of the poem. I clearly feel the honesty and purity in the words which the poet has expressed.

My experience with poetry has been alright. I don’t really like to write poems, I’m not the best with words. The only time I ever write poetry is for school. When I was in elementary school, I would roll my eye when poetry came up, I still do. Maybe as an adult I will learn to understand poetry better.
