I always remember my psychology teacher in hi school. I attended to a women’s school where my psychology teacher was the only man in all the school. There were uncomfortable moments for him because it. I can not forget how his face turned red after he got in the class, and also how students looked at him, waiting for the right moment to make a joke. He used to give us very good examples about human behavior; however, students were more interested about how handsome he was. His most common word was “please girls pay attention to the class!” but it seemed to be a hard rule to follow. Although he was a good teacher and students like his classes, the school decided not work with him anymore. It was a hard day for us to accept that decision , but there was nothing we can do, only learn from the experience and avoid teasing the next male teacher to come.

During my senior high school, An English teacher name Rowena; who is smart; yet wears a “poker face” in class. However, she has a well modulated voice like a TV broadcaster and pretty face I am so nervous. In fact, I have three reasons why I respected her. First, she never came late and dresses well. My first impressions to her are neat. Second, she uses many techniques in teaching. Although, I could hardly pass the subject, I loved it. Third, she touches my life by her kindness. She is a good example to me why I decided to be a teacher like her. Suddenly, my zest for teaching vanished after three years. One time, I visited her telling about my plans of leaving. She says with a brilliant smile,” Go! Try becoming overseas worker!” Now, she is still an enthusiastic teacher to me but a loving friend, too.

Kevin bray used short paragraph structure which made his writing very interesting. He knows that longer paragraphs will make his readers feel bored and give up reading. He also stated some sense of humor in his writing, as he described his hair cut like a salad bowel, to make his writing enjoyable and full of fun. Comparing the two teachers skillfully is another technique which Bray used to catches his reader attention.

1) A Positive Boy
In Kevin Bray’s essay, I like the idea of the “reading box”. Mr. Webb was a totally strange choice for being a teacher. Even I wasn’t sure such a person could teach any positive lesson about life to his students. We can see an irony here. Mr. Webb with his weird values and perspective gave a deep value to little Kevin by his uncomfortable action to “humiliate students”. The lesson of empathy “when he poured water on my head, and was too ashamed to come out and reveal my red face,” helped Kevin as a teacher; to imagine his students’ feelings and understand them.

2) Kevin Bray’s Style
With honesty and confidence, he wrote simply about his experiences. Meanwhile, the choice of the words helps to see, not only to read. The sound of the words like steep, thaw, muck, splinters made a clear image of the places and events. Also, I like the freely usage of the slang and informal words such – swits, drongos, geeky, and monikers which helped to feel a friendly relationship. A person with a rich diction can use the right word in the right place.

3) Biology Teacher
In high school, for four years, I had a biology teacher, Mrs. Ostovar, who was known as the best teacher in her district for many years. She had different strategies to make noisy students listen to her. Mrs. Ostovar was a very serious person who made fun of them and let the rest of the class laugh, too. During question times, maybe that amusement turned to teaching again the lesson by the classmates.
I remember she helped me to wear glasses while I thought she had no attention to me. I learned her gentle heart covered by a serious mask. Also, she taught us many important facts as females. With a deep foundation, she dug and formed in my soul many of the best structures of being a teacher. I used all her ways and tricks later on my students and honestly, they worked.

4) Teacher’s Task
Teachers with empathy have a great influence on the student’s lives and characters. I noticed that Kevin Bray has a very good relationship with his students when I read, “they [students] will come home and tell you things about me”. He freely mentions, “Some of it is true, some of it is exaggeration and some of it, I hope, is inspiring.” Mostly, students are speaking only about two kinds of teachers, the strong ones and the week ones.
Also, his attitude and approach toward his experiences were amazing. He showed his strong personality which could overcome on such a bad humiliation in his childhood. An optimistic person could make values come out of the worse situations. I think he is one of those teachers who knows his duty is making precious humans and good citizens from his students, not only teaching lessons.

My favourite example used in Kevin Bray’s essay is the “reading box”; how Mr. Webb taught the student about empathy. Like all the other kids, Kevin Bray laughed when spider-man poured water on someone else’s head; he thought they deserved the torture since most of them are bad kids. Until one day, he himself was invited into the “reading box” and had water poured on his head. He realized how badly he had been treated and learned the lesson of empathy through thinking about “the other kids who had suffered, and understood”.

Question 3:

The most impressive teacher for me is Li Xia, my grade 10 language teacher. Teacher Li liked to say “There is something good and interesting, but…”, so we called her “But” in private. At that time, I had excellent math, biology, and physics, but writing was a big problem for me. Many times, I felt so helpless that I couldn’t write anything in writing classes. “But” called me to her office after class and said, “I believe you can write very well. What you need to do is just to write whatever you want to and never mind the writing is good or bad.” Finally, I got an “A” in language course that was far more important than other “A”s. Don’t be afraid of making mistake is the most important thing “But” taught me.

Kevin Brey’s “Caught in a Teacher’s web” conveyed a significant meaning: attitude is important. What he told his daughter in this essay made a deep impression on me—“ you can’t choose your family and you can’t choose your teacher, so live the best you can with what you’re got.” Surely we cannot choose the circumstances or the people who we meet in such a long life, but the lucky thing is we have a choice of which on attitude to deal with everything every day. A teacher who “[loves] to humiliate” students “[teaches] me empathy”, so the positive attitude will make any terrible thing become useful and meaningful. Although we can’t change the inevitable, we can be in charge of our attitude—facing this imperfect world and doing our best.

Ustach

Mr. Doubouya was his name, but we called him Ustach. He was my Arabic teacher and he made his students feel as competitive as a swimmer in a swimming competition. When I was ten years old, he used to teach us how to read Arabic, and recite the Holy book of Islam. He punished students who came late to class or didn’t do their homework. I always followed his rules until one day I failed to. My homework was to read and memorize a line of a text given in class, but I teased my helper and he refused to help me. When I got to class, Ustach told me to hold my left ear with my right hand and right ear with my left ear just as he did to my classmates. After that day, I stopped teasing, lying and learned to be a good, hard working student.

Rewrite of queston 1

“Reading box ,” -- how
interesting it is. After reading the article, there is no doubt this example is my favorite part. He “invited kids into the reading box” to try to teach them what empathy was. The author laughed those kids who were put into the box until he was inside. After coming out from the box, I believe the author exactly knew the meaning of empathy. Obviously, the “reading box” worked well. He was an energetic, creative and extraordinary teacher compared to those common teachers.

Add quotation marks to word "box" in the article I wrote above.

My favourite example used in the essay is the story of the reading box. Sometimes people can not understand other one’s feeling because they are not in that situation and will think of it from different viewpoints. So when Kevin Bray saw the teacher tortured other kids, he thought that “they deserve it”. But after the teacher poured water on his head, he “thought about the other kids who had suffered, and understood.” In this way, all the students will think about the different feeling they have experienced and then they will understand the meaning of empathy.

Question 3:

I have an ESL teacher in the community centre called Eugene who is a 78-years-old man, working with us as a volunteer. Every time he came to the class, he dressed formally. Through almost half year studied with him, I got to know that he had been a soldier, a doctor, and a professor. He is very serious about using proper English, and told us that he found young people today have too many errors when they speak. He is knowledgeable and has many experience. When he talks about a word, he will tell us how use it and the history , even where it came from. Once I wrote an article about how I am depressed by being a stay-at-home mom, he encouraged me, and said, “ You are good mother. It is an important job.” I was moved by his inspiration.
