1. For the protagonists George, explain one of either man's traits based on a single scene.

George is character of mercy, complicated sentiment and sane reason. When George tells Lennie “look over there”, and Lennie imagines “We're gonna get a little place” and “a cow, and some pigs”, then George shots Lennie. The tear rolls in George’s eyes. That shows George wretches with his sentiment and reason. From his sensibility, he is eager to help Lennie escape from the Tyler Ranch’s manhunt and begin the new life in one new place. But this time, they may not be so luck to get away. If Lennie is caught by Tyler Ranch, they will torture him to death because George knows the Curly’s cruelty. So George decides to shot him when Lennie images a beautiful future’s scene, and Lennie dies with his whole hope and no pains, no regret. Maybe this kind of death is the best choice for an insane person like Lennie.

2. Curley’s Character assigned: Comment on the way the character is introduced to us in the movie and how that introduction helps us get to know that character’s personality.

Curley’s personality is irritable, cruel, arbitrary and selfish. When Curley comes to the bunkhouse, Lennie unconsciously smiles. Curley thinks Lennie mocks at his little stature, so he curses “No big son of a bitch is gonna laugh at me” and “get up” to fist Lennie heavily, and the hit makes Lennie's face and eyes bloody. That illustrates Curley's irritable and cruel traits. Curley looking for his wife for several times in the movies shows Curley is arbitrary about his wife, and he doesn’t want anybody approaching to her. At the same time, it means the dude has nothing to do in all day and always looks for a fight. Even his wife saying “He ain't a nice fella” implies Curley’s selfish and relentless personality. We can imagine Curley doesn’t really love and care his wife’s feeling from his heart and just treats her as a beautiful vase or toy.

Lennie’s Dependence

In the scene at the boss’s office it is easy to see how dependent Lennie is on George. For example, when George removes his hat, Lennie does as well. Lennie looks at George repeatedly, searching for cues on how to behave. In fact, the unusual behaviour of Lennie (including his not saying anything) strikes the boss as odd and makes him suspicious of George’s intentions.—65 words

Meeting “The Boss”

The boss is introduced as a man in control when we meet him in his ranch office. In the movie, it’s important to note his behaviours as much as what he says to George and Lennie. When the men are introduced to him by Candy, the boss is eating. The boss makes quite a show of taking his time to finish something on his plate before beginning to talk. He establishes his power by making them wait. He also has no time for George’s excuse for being late, saying “I don’t give a damn about that.” Before he questions the fact that George travels with Lennie, he stares long and hard at him. There is no doubt who is in charge at the ranch and that the boss has no time or compassion for the bad luck stories of his hired hands.—142 words

George’s smart

When George knows that Lennie killed Curley’s wife, he is angry, but he is composed and smart. He leaves the scene and asks Candy to tell the workers that something happens in the dry wheat draw room so that he can not be suspected a murder. He together with others come to the room and does not say anything. After Curley leads the workers to escape the murder, he immediately to look for George. All his actions and reactions in this situation show that he is a careful, thoughtful and intelligent man.

Curley’ wife
In the movie, we can see Curley’s wife is a pretty woman. There is no woman on the ranch except her, so she is lonely, and nobody can talk with her. Also she does not love her husband, so her mental is pain. However, she does not want to change her life by herself and want to depend on her husband to live. She is often sad and frustrated that her life does not turn out any better. She is very snobbish so that she reminds Crooks he is just a worker and a black worker at that to humiliate him. She spends much time around the men workers, and her provocative dress and pose make George anxious. Also, most of the men think she is troublesome and bold. All her speaking and actions tell us that she is a senseless ,shameless, and without self-respect person. At last, she is killed by Lennin because she gives her soft hair to him to touch, but he strokes too hard , and she gets frightened. Lennie tries to quiet her and accidentally breaks her neck. She is pathetic and innocent.

1,Lennie is simple

Lennie is as simple as a child but as strong as a bull. He is interested in the poppy. He hugged it, kissed it, and petted it in his strong hand. He even tried to take it back to his room by putting it inside his coat in front of his chest. He couldnt control the strength of his hands, and results the puppy died. He fell to extremely sadness after the puppy died. The poor intellectually disabled man! ----80 words

2, Candy----weak and helpless

Although Candy has worked a long time for the ranch boss, he is still weak and helpless in front of the boss family. When Curly wants to take away his dog what has followed him many years, Candy is hurt deeply, but he doesnt say much to resist Curly. He just is angry and sad helplessly. He bended his back and then laid on his bed soundlessly.

George’s warm and tender.

George tries to use his toughness outside to cover his warm and tender inside. No one knows since when George takes Lennie as part of his responsibility rather than a burden. Although George and Lennie have nothing in common, but they have one little dream to share—to have a small ranch themselves. George pretends to be cold and tough to others, that is actually the way he protects Lennie and himself. He is one of the minority groups in our modern society; he talks less and does more. He treats Lennie as his own brother. Even Lennie has some handicap, but he is needed by George and well as he needs George. In the beginning of the movie, George and Lennie escaped from a ranch, George pushes Lennie to keep moving fast and runs himself, and again pushes and runs and pushes… He can not leave Lennie behind; even he knows he can run faster without Lennie.

Give an example of any repeated actions or gestures made by the character and how these help to communicate a trait of character to the viewers.

When Lennie has that little conversation with Crook, Crook repeats servals times about the world “right”. “You ain’s got no right to come into my room. Ain’t nobody got a right to be here but me.” Crook is a small character in this movie, but with his very few words we can understand his position well. Clearly, as a victim of rate prejudice, he is been told too many times in his life about what he’s supposed not to do, or no “right” to do. He wants so badly to move into the bunkhouse as other guys who work in the same ranch do; he simply has no “right” to do so because he is a black and he stinks. He is jealousy of Lennie, as Lennie has the “right” to live in bunkhouse and rather than that, Lennis has George to support him like a brother, especially, Lennie is not perfect at all—he is also a handicap. That causes Crook looses his balance again so he uses his only advantage to tease Lennie to express his un-satisfaction and loneliness.

Lennie

I believe Lennie is a strong person whom works hard when told what to do and is mentaly ill. With that, I find him unable to take care of himself as far as basic needs for one's self is concerned. He loved George becuase George was looked at as his gardian and friend. They met eachother when their Aunt died and had to look after eachother. George, however, was the able body to make both of their life's decisions. The trait for Lennie comes across as playful like a child when they play with their toys, only Lennie deosn't understand his own strength. Another decision he was incapable of making was how far to take it. Lennie with out knowing the way to handle small and delicate things got rough with the puppy and the girl ending up with him killing the puppy and the girl through horse play.

George is full of love and patience. He is willing to take the responsibility to look after Lennie no matter what continuous troubles Lennie brought to him. Lennie to George, like the sheepdog to Candy, Lennie trusts George so much, and George is like father and brother to Lennie. So, while Candy’s dog had become a trouble, and was brought out to be shot, Candy was lying on the bed, crouching and crying, and George kept staring at Candy. George sensed the pain of losing the loved. He was afraid that one day he will lose Lennie at the same way. Although Lennie is a trouble-maker, but George doesn’t get rid of him. At the end he helped Lennie have a better dying way. George shows a man with great kindness and love.

Comment on the way the character is introduced to us in the movie and how that introduction helps us get to know that character’s personality.

The character, Curley’s wife, is introduced to the viewers as a way that she’s leaning and waiting for someone to talk to or she is looking for her husband. The former way shows that she is lonely, she has nothing to do in her daily life, and she is looking for someone to talk to. Curley’s wife is living in a farm having a bunch of men without women but she is not allowed to talk to any one of them. Whom she can talk to? Nobody except her husband. On the other hand, her husband does what he wants and neglects her. She has no idea about where he is going to. That’s why she always looks for him. She has dreams about herself but she has not enough courage to fight for it.

Candy

Candy is an old man with an old companion that have lived their live's to the fullest with eachother and lived it as simple as they could. The farmworkers lived in bunks, worked all day, and earned their money.Candy was seen as useless because he was unable to bare the physical labour and his only job was to sweep. He spent most of his time with his dog and was probabley the only sure thing left in his life. The farmers decided to take action into their own hands. They wanted to put the dog out of it's old age. Candy seemed pain stricken by this comment but saw it as only a comment and not an action. The dog ends up getting put down leading to Candy feeling lost and emotionaly hurt at losing his best friend. Candy finds out that George and Lenny want a place of their own to do what they want with and invite whom they feel comfortable with to visit. Candy wants in on the deal and offers to front money to hold the house they want. I saw it as three simple men with one simple dream to own a house and all the farm animals they wanted with the company of people they chose.

1.For the protagonists George, explain one of either man's traits based on a single scene.

In the movie, George's character toward Lennie is patient and very helpful like a his father of the eldest brother. George and Lennie spend a night near by the edge of the water. Lennie is eager to hear about their dream again and again. Lennie teases George to tell Lennie the story. In spite of George is tired, George tells him about that dreamy and familiarity. When Lennie breaks into George's talking by "the rabbit", George never scold Lennie and describe gently.(86 words)

2.Comment on the way the character is introduced to us in the movie and how that introduction help us get to know that character's personality.

Carlson's personality is reasonable and strong.

In the movie, we can figure out Carlson's personality easily through his action. First, in the bunkhouse, some workers and Candy talk about Candy's old dog. Their opinions on the dog are almost negative. At that moment, Carlson objects to the smell of Candy's old dog. Carlson volunteers for shooting the dog instead of others at last.
He puts a gun and takes the dog outside shooting.

When they are eating in the cafeteria, Carlson pushes a man without excuse. The man moves aside
quietly, and he does not complain to Carlson. He is a very powerful man.

Having No Alternative

George, one of the main character of the film “ Of Mice and Men”, have no alternative to finish Lennie’s life. George is a kind , thoughtful, and rational person . George and Lennie are just good friends, but George pays more patience to look after Lennie, and tries to keep him out of troubles. For example, Meanwhile, George keeps the work card and reminds Lennie to keep quiet all the time. George lets Lennie to raise the wagon to show how excellent ability he has. George also wants Lennie t o keep away from Curley and his wife. George knows Lennie who is kind, strong, and quick, and he doesn’t know any rules. George thinks Lennie will be treated cruelly until die by Curley after his wife was killed by Lennie. Finally, George decides to give a short pain and a happy forever for Lennie. I think that is not a good way to resolve this situation but that is another way to protect Lennie. George will have to take a suffering in his mind forever.

Lennie is Naïve

Actually, Lennie is an intellectually disabled man. That is why he makes me laugh what he says or acts when I watched the movie. For example, when Lennie and George want to have a rest beside a lake, Lennie runs to the lake, prostrates himself to the ground and drinks a large draft. The action likes a cute puppy to have a drink. When George says “ I got three cans of beans in my bindle”, Lennie repeats “I like beans with ketchup” twice as if he were a little boy to want to get parents’ more attention. When George blames Lennie always let them get in trouble, Lennie thinks he should go away and get a cave to live. Lennie’s thought is so simple and funny. Sometime I do admire Lennie because he has no much annoyance from the adult world. He is so naïve and not complicated and sophisticated. I guess that is why George never abandons Lennie. (158 words)

Carlson is disgusted

I don’t like Carlson, who is a ranch-hand in the movie. He is a big guy with mustache and also a merciless man because he gives advice to shoot Candy’s dog and does that joyfully. Candy is unwilling, but he insists and says “We can’t sleep with that stinking dog in here”. How cruel he is!
When people find Lennie killed Curley’s wife, Carlson is the first person to say “I’ll get my gun. I’ll go with you.” It seems he prefers doing this kind of bloody thing—both killing dog and people. Therefore he is a villain in the movie. (101 words)

Topic 1
George is one of the protagonists in a movie “Of Mice and Men”.
At the start of scene, when he and Lennie stormed away from the chasers, he shouted to Lennie, “Come on.” It continued until they caught the running train to escape form the village. It implies that George will take care of Lennie like a guardian. Even though he looks like short and weak, he has special strong mind to control others. His sharp eyesight and firm speaking show how he is brave and courageous. It helps to communicate with companies included Lennie very well because it can prove he is a reliable man. George is a warm hearted man and has a strong sense of responsibility. (121 words)

Topic 2
About Candy.
Old man Candy regrets that he didn’t shoot his old dog when the dog was too old to live. He doesn’t have any relative, so he joins the dream of buying the land with George and Lennie. He has been
really hardship in his whole life, so his absence of expression is from start to finish. When he appears the screen, the viewers can understand what will show the next situation. Because Candy’s appearance means unexpected incident happens. After Lennie makes a trouble and runs away, Candy comes to George. Even though Candy says nothing, George’s face shows that he already anticipates all states. (108 words)

From Kenny:

Protagonist; Lennie and George
I don’t know the reason why he and George are fleeing from chasing team from the beginning. But considering the story developed thereafter the cause seems Lennie’s responsibility. He killed a woman in this time. He realized he couldn’t afford Lennie’s continuing mistakes. Also George is well aware that Lennie will be die after painful lynch of Curley and his worker.
He followed Lennie with stolen gun.
When they meet together Lennie told to George, “I done another bad thing.”
George lead their conversation to their common dream.
As George listen to the distant sound of dogs barking, he brough out pistol from his pocket and snapped off the safety. George say “we’re gonna have a cow, and some pigs, and gonna have a chicken and we’ll have a field of alfafa.”
Lennie shouted “For the rabbits.” “ And I get to tend the rabbits.” He shouted with happiness.
George pulled the trigger to the back of the Lennie’s head from behind.
He settled slowly forward to the sand and lay down without pain.

Character of Curley’s wife

Curley’s wife is young, good looking woman. It seems that she has unsatisfied living with her husband, so she wanted to receive other man’s love. Nobody wants a mate with her because she is a wife of ranch owner’s son. It makes her lonely. Several times she wanted to approach to George but he is so clever to understand the situation and keep distance between them.
She approached even to Lennie who has no attractiveness. Lennie likes the soft material like fur of small animal.
In this time he likes to touch heir of Curley’s wife for a moment. She has amused herself but when she wanted to quit this behavior and Lennie want to continue. She shouted for help and he try to prevent her yell. During this conflict she was dead helplessly.
She is a victim of rural man’s community

Slim is my assigned character.

Slim, the leader of the grain team at the ranch in the movie of “Of Mice and Men”, is a big, tall, quiet, calm and rational person. First, when Curley asked loudly, “ Slim, come down here. “, Slim did not angry with him. Slim angry and does not like to say any words but “ then” three times after every question Curley asked. Second, When Lennie hurt Curley’s hand, Slim take off Curley’s right hand glove, and wrap his right hand with white handkerchief right away. Slim let somebody to prepare a wagon, and send Curley to see the doctor. On the end of the movie, Slim knows Lennie will be treated cruelly by Curley when Curley’s wife was killed by Lennie. There is no way to save Lennie because of Curley. Slim said to George, “ I have a idea, that is only one way …”. At the same time, George show the gun to Slim. Slim does not say any word again just using nod to answer George. Finally, Slim still does not say any word but point George to the police with his head. I think Slim has a good experience in his work, and he does anything well because his confidence. He is so cool.

As Simple as Lennie
Lennie didn’t think much, he did what George told him to. In the movie, the night before they reach the ranch which they were going to work at, George asked Lennie to remember where they were carefully and as best as he could; in case of something happened, hide here, wait for George to come. Lennie assured George he can remember this very well. For Lennie, always wanted to prove himself to George he always did what George told him to. So one day when they got a ranch of their own, George would allowe him to tend the rabbits.

A Lonely Soul
Curly’s wife stepped into the barn unexpectedly and startled the newcomers George & Lennie. Could anything bad happen because of this woman? This is what George keeps in mind, and be aware of. George did not hide his unwelcome feeling whenever he encountered with Curly’s wife. She is the only woman on the ranch, married to a detached husband. She is lonely; always wondering around the ranch for the ranch is so isolated that she can’t even run away from it on foot. She is in desperate need to have someone to talk to, someone even Lennie couldn’t respond well; is fine.
