Answer to Topic 10

Compare the American girl at a hotel in Italy with the cat in the rain. There are some things alike between them. The first one: The American girl stayed at a hotel in Italy. The cat crouched under the one of the dripping green table. The hotel to the American girl was as like the table to the cat. Both of them were useful shelters to them, but were not comfortable. The second one: The American girl was eager for the comfortable at her own home with silver, candles, dress mirror, kitty, and new cloth. The cat was eager for keeping dry as its regular status. The third one: The American girl felt so boring that she wanted a cat badly. The cat felt so boring that it was gone in the rain. They were in the similar situation.

Top 5 describe your feelings as you read the writing and what sort of experience you had.

The American couple originally planed to spend their honeymoon in beautiful Italy, but they met such a rainy day, and had to stay at the hotel with the bored mood. The wife felt very disappointed and nothing interested her. She stood at the window and saw a cat crouching under one green dripping table, which raised her sympathy. So she went out to get the poor kitty, but it was gone and she was very disappointed. There was nothing making her fun, so she wanted to have some new and different things contrasted with such a dreary day, such as her appearance, new clothes, smiling spring, even a poor kitty. When one person is in a very strange, lonely and tiresome circumstance, he/she is always eager to do something special to make some changes, and then make him/her become important. For example, there are much rain and snow in Vancouver’s winter; I am always in the low and depressive mood. In order to make me excite, I often imagine the shiny days, go outside if possible and arrange my schedule full, then there is no much time to pay attention to the dull weather and other things.

Topic 12

There were two not well connected souls stuck in a hotel room on a rainy afternoon while they were travelling aboard in this short story. A bored, unsatisfied wife ignored by her husband who was obviously intent on keep reading his book reminds me traces of friction that may often occur between couples in their daily life. I am surprised by the hotel owner in this story because he was gentle and considerate. He observed and paid attention to what his guests might need and his kindness lit up people’s heart; knowing there will be someone that cares about them somewhere. There will be unexpected joy created by the ones whom are not expected to do so. This gives us a hint to look forward to a brighter side of the future. Josephine

topic 15

When I saw the title `` Cat in the

Rain ``, I thought that must

something happened on a cat.

However, at the exposition of the

story, the background doesn't tell

us anything about a cat.

Following to the rising action, ``

a cat was crouched under one of the

dripping green tables``. But i was

still confused what was the

connection between the American

girl and the cat in the rain. When

I read to the climax of the story,

I knew that the American girl's

situation is similar with the cat

in the rain. The girl is ignored

by her husband, and she is boring

to stay in the hotel in the

raining day. Also, she is

disappointed. When I finished the

story, I knew that the cat's ran

away is the foreshadow that the

girl can walk out the bad mood. At

the end of the story, the hotel

owner's action improves this point.

Topic 10

As the wife was looking through the window, watching the rain fall, she took notice in a cat in need of shelter from the rain.When she made her way down the stairs and towards the door she felt a great importance the hotelkeeper gave her.She saw the attentiveness the hotelkeeper had for her when the maid was sent over with an umbrella.She really liked the hotelkeeper.The wife came back with the disappointment of having no cat.George was still reading like he was before.She expressed to him she wanted the cat and to grow her hair out.But, George did not take interest in how she felt and dismissed her only to keep reading.The fact that a complete stranger could make her feel that way shows that her and her husband and are two different people.Leading to her wanting and needing to feel of importance.Therefore, having two different interests

Cat in the Rain, Topic 4,

This story reminds me a movie 'Shall We Dance’. The first scene was a birthday celebration of the main character who was a good father, a beloved husband, and a great member of the company. After his wife gave the gift, she complained he didn't require anything about his wants. When they were in their bed, even she was already sleeping, he murmured himself, “It’s not that I don’t want anything, but…” The American girl and he have similar feeling, even though the situation and background are totally different. In order to express his frustration, he went a dance club that was near the train station caused by attraction of a beautiful woman, On the other hand, she compared the hotel owner and her husband, and she became to like his all appearances and behaviors. The girl wanted a cat because she exposed her dissatisfaction about her emptiness. Fortunately, they didn’t do the wrong way; moreover, they got over the circumstances.

Why does the American wife stick to the cat so hard? I think she was suffering from the same pain as the cat was. The American wife who did not take interest from her husband would see the image of herself through the cat which was crouched under one of the dripping green tables. “I want a kitty” that American wife told over again is a shout without sound to her husband. The words also mean that she wanted to arouse the interest of her husband. They resembled each other and were in a similar situation. The author gives a message to its readers that human action shows his or her inner mind indirectly.

Finally, the American wife could get the cat in the ending. I wish the American wife keep peace of her mind with her cat and come to understand and communicate mentally with her husband.

Topic 15

After first reading, I wondered what deep meaning of this short story expressed. However, this story was written by Ernest Hemingway, who is so famous in the world and has published much fiction reflected significant social issues. How can this story mean nothing? I read it repeatedly. Gradually, I think there are some connections between the American wife and the cat. Comparing the circumstances they were in, they have some similarities. Firstly, they were ignored by the surroundings. The wife was disregarded by her husband, who was almost lying on the bed and reading in the whole story. He didn’t care about what his wife said and did. The cat was crouched under a table in order to avoid the rain drops. Nobody noticed and took care of it as if the poor cat was abandoned by the whole world. Secondly, they were restricted in the small world and had no freedom at all. The whole world of the wife was her family. She was obedient to his husband even her hair style. She felt bored and tired. When she saw the poor cat in the rain, she thought the cat under the small table had the same situation as her. She wanted to save it as if she wanted to change her life. At last, her husband said shut up to break the hopes of the wife.

The husband and the wife. First, he does not support her ideas. For example, she prefers having her hair grow back , and he gives a careless response. She wants to have a romantic dinner and new clothes, but he reflects ”Oh,shut up and get something to read.” Secondly, her feelings might have been ignoring by her husband. That's why she is touched in her heart as the hotel owner treats her so respectfully and thoughtfully. The hotel owner sends the maid to accompany her with an umbrella instead of just saying “Don't get wet.”. At the end of the story, the hotel owner brings her a cat which she passionately wants it to fulfill her wish that contrasts with her husband who doesn't listen to her and just pays attention to read his book. In my thoughts, the cat in the story refers to two significances. One is the real cat which was hoped to keep the wife company and to comfort her while the cat was sitting on her lap ; the other significance is referring to something that the wife expects for which could be to be valued or fulfill her self consciousness. Behind the story, it indicates that man and woman are different in many dimensions. Wife says this, while husband says that. Especially for a couple, it needs lots of efforts to keep understanding each other and to meet each other's needs. Otherwise , the relationship will be going boring and worse.

Topic 4 Write about something in the writing that reminds you of someone you know or of something that has happened in your life.

This whole sotry reminds me the story happened on my girlfriend. My girlfiend is a very pretty woman. She mairred a rich business man when she was 23. She had two lovely children and everybody thought she lived a happy life. Few months ago, I met her in a clud and she told me she devoiced. She fell in love with her own deiver. Her son found that and told his father. She told me she never regreted to do that. The man she mariied was the man who married her beauty. The driver she loved was the man who took care her everyday. In this sotry, I can understand that actually the woman did not want anything changed but her husband's attituade. The reason she liked the padrone was beacuse he cared about what she needed.

Topics 1. Tell about how you feel toward this writing or its author and why.

It is quite simple story. Actually I could not find out their meaning.

It was a raining day. A man reading a book on the bed in the second floor room of hotel along the sea. His wife stood at the window for looking out and found a crouched cat under one of green table in the garden to avoid the drip of rain. She want to get that kitty and went down. But already she was gone. She came back to her room. Maybe she has disappointed a lot. At that time maid knock the door and gave the cat to the lady.

May be that story could happen during 30 minute.
Also I found that most sentence are repeated again and again. It was a so simple story that I can't understand the theme the story gave me.

I am astonished that the author is a famous novelist, Ernest Hemingway. There are many things happen in this world.

Cat in the Rain.

Blog Topic 1

The relationship between husband and wife are an interesting topic to study. In the story, the husband must be stupid. Anything she wants seems irrelevant to the husband when they were on a trip in Italy. The things she wants can be easily satisfied but the husband just don’t want to accept her request to let her have a long hair. The writer used a cat which needed to be taken care of same as the sensitive American girl wanted to be loved. The voice from George “Yeah?” “Oh, shut up.” must be full of impatient and irritated to blame the annoying wife keep interrupting his reading. The conflict built up by their conversation. It is hard for me to believe they are a young couple and travel together in Italy.

topic 7 Write about the most effective things you notice in the writing

The most effective things are confidence, independence and attraction I notice in the writing. First, the American wife did not has more confidence to herself. For example, if she got so tied of looking like a boy in her hair style, she could decide herself to change what she likes. She ought to understand if her hair grow out that will be more beautiful than short hair style now. She could pull her hair back tight and smooth and make a big knot at the back . She will be a elegant American wife. The American wife could do something for herself like she could arrange to eat at a table with her own silver and candles. A housewife can do anything for her family if it is a good for her family. She just did it , and that is housewife's job. After she changed her hair style like lovely lady, and made her house more romantic and warm by herself. She did not bother her husband in small things. I think Her husband would surprise how attraction his wife is. They will have more interesting conversation in their life.

After I read "Cat in the Rain", I felt sympathy for the woman.
Absolutely before they leave, they planned for a wonderful and memorial trip. Her husband and she never thought about the terrible rainy day and stayed in the hotel with a boring mood. For me, I had
experienced as the couple.Seven years ago, my family and my brother's family went to travel to the beach. We had planned and prepared for our exciting trip with games and outside playing equipment for four nights and five days.However, it rained in torrents for four days. And then, we did not book hotel rooms. We planned to stay in camp. However, we could not go out because it was cats and dogs. Thus, we lodged at a private residence, and we wished to come out such a shining sun. My sons and my brother's children were extremely bored, so they moved in the room like mice:jumping, running, fighting, and crying. I felt that we were cofined in a bird cage.
