  • Your description must include dialogue (words of a character spoken aloud).
  • You must not use the adjective anywhere in your description.

Your adjectives: clumsy, easygoing, lonely, loving, humorous. Post your writing as a comment to this posting, please. See you next Wednesday to begin work on a new short story.

Paula paced in front of the window. Outside, the drizzle continued to fall. Another grey Vancouver day! She hesitated, looking at her umbrella and boots and at the puddle of water, still there from the day before.

His shoes were dry. He’d been gone for three weeks, but it already seemed an eternity.

“What would I do without him?” she wondered aloud, startling herself with the sound of her own voice.

The music was being played briskly. All the people here were laughing and chatting with each other. However, separated and quietly, Fiona stood at the corner. She didn’t know anyone in this party except her husband.

“Hey, honey, guess what happened,” her husband walked toward her cheerfully and said, “I found a big fish. I bet I can persuade him.”
“Oh, that’s good,” Fiona said, “but honey……”
“Oh, damned! John is approaching him! I have to go.” Her husband went away in hurry.
“But honey!” Fiona raised her voice.
“I will be back, honey. I love you.” He disappeared in the crowd.
“I love you,” Fiona murmured.

Her wedding day came. Rebecca pushed the windows open, welcoming the morning sunlight. She was a bride. This day would be the longest and perhaps the most difficult of her life. When the couturiere arrived with the exquisite wedding dress, Rebecca put it on and stared at the reflection in the mirror. She saw herself draped in icy white satin and stiff lace with a luxurious train that gleamed in the light. Her father never regretted spending money on his daughter.

“I prefer it simple. Too much this, too much that makes people notice only the gown and not the woman,” she murmured, as she felt her palms grow damp.

The light of my reading –lamp illuminated only half a room. It looked that nothing could disturb that quiet peace. Even two kittens seemed to be new members of “taciturn association”. I was trying to write a letter, but only quiet a few words could appear on a white piece of paper. I hesitated, looking at a pen, being afraid of my own thoughts. Another trial to add something just put me through new emotional pass. I could not hold my tears. Nothing I can change.

“How could I leave my dad and mom at their retirement, being the main support in their dreams? What the hell made me pick-up this country?” I said loudly to myself, and sound of my own voice bounced off the quiet.

One day in the morning at home, Judy, Amy's mother shouted out,“Quickly, Amy, get up. It's time to go to school or you will be late.”

“Mom, I'm not well, my head aches. Can I stay at home, please?” said Amy.

“Are you okay?” Judy asked and then she went to Amy's room and took her temperature.

Crying, Amy felt so uncomfortable and said,“I don't know, but I do not feel well. Maybe I catch a cold.”

After embracing Amy, Judy said, “Don't cry, my dear. We'll go to see your family doctor after I inform your teacher. You'll feel better in no time.”

In the living room, luxury sofas attracted people’s eyes at once. A big gold vase, with colorful flowers, was at the corner. Expensive looking foods were on the table. Classical music was spreading around the house. People were eating, chatting, and laughing. The atmosphere ensured that this party is successful.

Suddenly, Helen showed off her husband who is a herb doctor. Her husband said, “You are the most beautiful woman in the world. I have never seen a woman like you.” All her friends envied her because she has not only a fortune, but also the best husband.

When I came back home, I told my husband about Helen’s husband. However, my husband said, “He ate too much herb medicine instead of selling them.”

Lili was sitting in their recently remodelled kitchcn sipping hot coffee. She noticed several tins of paint beside the kitchen door. Surprised, she opened one of the can’s lid.
“Good morning,” her husband said. His left arm was in a sling from his accident while remodelling.
“Honey, what’s the paint for?”, she asked while pouring a cup of coffee for him.
“For our garage,” he answered.
“But, it is black,” Lili said.
“What?” He shouted with his mouth wide open, and panting with his tongue sticking out. The hot coffee had burned him. Realizing he had bought the wrong colour, he lifted the can to check the label. Unfortunately, he dropped the can spilling paint all over the floor and himself. A black day.

He added his laughing voice, "Actually, my finger is broken."

In front of the computer desk, Mike concentrated as he played. He wasn't conscious of his mother's calling. Suddenly, he heard a raised voice with anger from the kitchen, "Mike, did you hear me? Set the table for dinner!"

Instantly, Mike appeared with a naughty expression, "Sorry, mom. I didn't hear you!"

"As long as you touch the computer,
you can hear nothing!"

"I'm really sorry, mom." He apologized in a gentle voice with a
wry face as he nimbly set the table.

"If you have no listening ears towards me, in the future your child will also has no listening ears to you!"

"Oh, mom! Now I understand why I have no listening ears!"

He had to make a decision quickly, but there was no one he could talk to. His gaze turned back to the leaflet, which had lain on his desk for weeks. Loudly, he read the telephone number out. With a deep breath, he picked up the phone and dialed.

“Life Is Hope Society,” an energetic voice answered. “ This is Mary Anderson speaking. May I help you?”

“Au,” the old man replied with hesitation, “do you have male consultants? I have difficulty in talking with young ladies.”

“Sorry, I am the only one on duty.”

He dropped down the phone and sighed.

While John and Patty were planning their next vacation, they soon realized they had very different ideas on where to go. Patty really wanted to go somewhere hot and relaxing, like Mexico. John, however, would much rather go to Europe.

“If we go to Europe, then how will we have time to enjoy ourselves and relax,” Patty says. “We’ll be too busy rushing around all the time.”

“Well,” John replies, “don’t you think Mexico is a little bit too relaxing for us, we’ve been there twice already in the past five years.”

Patty thinks for a while and realizes John is right. They could still have fun, relax, and learn at the same time in Europe.

When his dad arrived home, 8-year-old Christ was drawing a mother and baby crocodile on colored paper with his small and cute hands. He didn't realize his dad was home, because he was paying attention to making a story book. When he drew pictures, his face was full of smile and enjoyment. On some paper, he drew a baby crocodile that was taking a gulp of milk, and on another paper, he drew a baby playing with his friends in a pond. After that he made stories under the pictures. When he noticed his dad, he said "This is Woo's first birthday present. I hope he likes this present.I don't have enough money to buy pretty toys." His dad said "Can you make a story book for me at my birthday too?"

Christine, the girl next door ,often dropped or broke things whatever she carried; there were no exception of her new bikes either. I remember clearly, while I was tutoring her the theory of music, at the time she was twelve, she couldn't sit still and fell off the chair; then, the chair bumped against my dining-room wall and left an ugly deep scrape. Yesterday afternoon her father, who is an experienced driving instructor, told me that his daughter will soon be sixteen.

"I'll find Young Drive Institute for her," he said powerlessly. "I can't imagine what would happen if she actually drives a car."
