Report on Advertising During a Favourite Show

You do not need to say something about every advertisement! See if you can provide a general sense of the messages and what they convey to you. Is there a connection between the commercials and the show itself? Enjoy the show!

I watched Jeopardy and had the first impression that there were tons of commercials. I counted 23 during the 30 minutes. Three were repeated. One was an incredibly sexist view of women who attended a class on using bleach. The teacher was a peppy young guy wearing a garish orange “Spray ‘n Wash” sweatshirt. He condescended to the all-woman class and they lapped it up. Disgusting! The other interesting repeat was a Lotto Super 7 ad with a disheveled looking young guy (jeans and sloppy sweatshirt) standing in a garage full of exotic and expensive cars. This is the one product I do buy sometimes, so it was interesting for me to see the “ultimate” toy this guy had bought with his winnings—a monster truck with two-meter high tires. I sure hope real winners do better than that, but maybe by exaggerating the Lotto corporation meant to make me feel superior to him. A McDonald’s ad had a stereotypical black male executive in a goatee, but played him against type as a fuss budget (and a stickler for proper punctuation!). I found it quite fatiguing to pay such close attention; in the end, advertisers probably prefer a half-hypnotized viewer.

The Omni News (Mandarin news) is my favorite program. The program shows from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. every day. However, the one hour of news was interrupted six times by various advertisements. These advertisements consist of about twenty five kinds, including TOYOTA cars, KITKAT chocolates, BRICK mattresses, DQ hamburgers, and so on. None were repeated. Some companies’ service advertisements have strong attraction, such as Coast Capital’s free account, HSBC bank’s abroad account, and Remax.ca company fast selling service. Sometimes, I am allured or enthralled by their sweet words, so I allow myself to go into the store and buy these advertised products. For instance, the PANTENE shampoo and conditioner are my favorite products. I often buy and use them. When I view the PANTENE ads, I feel good because I seem to smell the shampoo flower odor and the perfume smell as though it has fallen on my hair. In other words, with ads similar to the PANTENE ads, I often watch them more than two times, and I continually discover their new products. Of course, the public service ads can give me some useful messages, for example, the import laws from the Canada government, which tell me some important information about contraband. Therefore, the good ads can direct my consumption, but the bad ads make me feel annoyed.

I watched American’s Next Top Model and was surprised with the amount of commercials being shown. I counted forty five during the one hour show. Five of those commercials were repeated. One in particular was the skin care ageing cream (by Niever). The commercial portrays a woman in her middle age with wrinkles on her face. She was later introduced to Niever age defining cream. Within a short period of time, her face looked younger and radiant. Amazing! Another interesting repetition of the commercials was the fruit hair shampoo by Garnier. In this commercial, a lady with a lifeless looking hair tried the Garnier fruity shampoo. Astonishingly, her hair looked healthier, fuller and shinier. They showed different kinds of fruits that went into the bottle, full of vitamins and minerals. That was the reason behind the healthy looking hair. Very interesting! This one I would like to try, because of the natural ingredient it portrays. I find it quite tempting. With the number of commercials shown and what it portrays, no one is free from it’s prey.

I never pay attention to TV ads although it bothers me time to time, I used to walk away when it pops up and come back when it is over. But last night I did watch those ads from my favorite movie channel, it is because my homework is to write about TV commercials. So I switched to the movie channel, it was “Spider Man” on showing. By watching Spider Man jumped to the sky, I began to count ads during the show. Interestingly I found some facts I never noticed before: the ads popped up every 15 minutes, and each time they lasted 5 minutes. During each 5 minutes, there were about 5 or 6 ads which varied from food, movie trailer, car insurance, medicine, cosmetics to some home products. If you are a TV addict, it is very likely that you are sticking before your TV waiting for the ads going over then you can keep watching your favorite program. While you causally scan these ads, one of them might catch your eyes; then you probably become their potential consumer even you are not yet aware of it. I have to admit those TV commercial makers are using smart strategies; but I do hate ads especially when I was steeped in the movie, they totally ruined my mood.

I hate watching advertisings on TV, for those always break off the performances and interrupt my attention. This evening, when I was watching a Chinese movie, the advertisings broke in. The first one was about pizza. The three big, yellow-reddish pizzas made the picture full. Then a big belly young guy in a sloppy sweatshirt was wolfing down the pizza one by one without chewing, and his action followed fast and noisy music. I was worry about that he would have the hiccups later. The second one was also funny. A black cat with green--yellowish eyes ran on the screen, following up with numbers of tins of cat food with compliments voice. When the black cat was gracefully eating its food in a well-decorated kitchen, a yellow dog and a pair of pretty parrots joined in. It puzzled me. Did the dog, cat and birds have the same taste? The set of advertisings also included a brief introduction about three restaurants. The set of advertisings lasted for five minutes, but it interrupts the movie five times. They cut the movie into pieces, and they almost drive me sick. That’s why I treat the TV ads like gatecrashers.

I really don’t like the ads when I watch the TV programs, but I never count that how many ads appear during the program. Today morning, when I opened TV, I saw a program just started on COSMO TV. Then following, I counted that over 20 ads came up. It took about 10 minutes. The various ads impress you to believe the productions having good qualities while you see the pictures’ colors and layout of the ads. I was very patient to watch because usually I will change the program.
The program started around 9:05 am, and end at 9:28 am for one section. During that time it was interrupted by ads three times, and every time was about 3 minutes. The first time ad is asking donation for helping the children in Affric. If you look the ad, you will fill with pity for the poor diseased children. They lived in poor conditions: no food, and no clothes. The second ad was a fashion clothing ad. The five beautiful girls wear the different fashion clothing impress you that you want have one. And the last one was a Super Juicer machine ad. The demo showed that machine is best one to compare with the others to persuade you to believe. So obviously, the media is very powerful especially the TV commercial ad. If you are not aware of it, probably you will become their consumer.

For the assignment, I turned on the TV to look for some regular programs which I rarely watched because my son always asks for his children’s programs. I found 2009 Figure Skating Championship on CBC; my son also interested in skating, so we settled down on this program. During the game, every 15 minutes there were four to five minutes (six to eight) advertisements. In the longer ads time, CBC advertised more about their own programs. There were some ads about basketball and soccer live shows, and goggles. I think it is very effective because people who are watching the game have higher possibility to play some kinds of sports themselves. I felt it is interesting that they put some ads which were other kind of things, such as Air Miles, Nisson Car, Cheez Whiz, Cosmetics, A&W Burger, and so on, in front of the ‘related’ ads, and CBC’s ads at the end. It is a kind of strategy or something. When I watch dramas, I always do something else while it is ads’ time. I hate the ads because the ads distract my attention. However this time I didn’t feel that bad because compare to the audients sitting in the Staple Center in Los Angeles, I didn’t have to actually be there and pay the admission fee, even watched the brilliant parts in slow motion. I appreciate that the sponsors who paid the money to give me the chance to watch the game at home. It is no harm for me to have a rest after watching every two players. In a Cheez Whiz ad, a girl, a boy and an adult ate everything with the cheese product; they even tossed everything on their table into the cheese bowl. I know it says that the cheese matches everything, and you can eat everything with their product, but I really don’t think so, and it is too much calorie for people. Although the ads all persuade people to believe they are the best and change people to be their potential customers, they still help us get what we need. This world was full of advertisements; we always need to think what we really need and what are real in those sweet words.

This afternoon, I watched Oprah Winfrey show (only half of it). Within the thirty minutes, twenty one ads were shown. Since the majority viewers of this show were females, the commercials had targeted women as their primary consumers. There were a few repeated ads. One was an Astro fat-free yogurt with seemingly a blissful family parading their slim and staggering look as they savoring its flavor. It gave me impression that I could be trendy and stylish if I took it as my snack. The other interesting ad was about a Save on Foods. Most of us, the viewers in BC, knew that it’s one of big grocery chain in town and expected the commercial to be on food or grocery stuff; however, it wasn’t about the food but the charity and donation they made to the local children hospital. And also they gently challenged viewers to participate in their good cause. It was a charming lure and made me to consider supporting the local chain than foreign mega corporation. Commercials seem to be very brief and passing fleetingly as tornado that viewers can easily miss out most of what the ad is all about. But nonetheless, viewers including me are slowly brainwashed by the power of commercials even unconsciously—surly it affects my daily consumption (though I don’t like to admit it). 225 words

I watched Omni News (Mandarin version) for thirty-five minutes from 8:00pm to 8:35pm. Here is the program: the first 12minutes from 8:00pm-8:12pm was news, and then followed by the host's saying "Let's have a rest," came to three minutes’ advertising which included five items: Lexus car, RONA decoration, Life insurance and burning survivor at Burnfund.org. From 8:15pm to 8:20pm, there were half time news and half time advertising which had five items including Denny's breakfast, Credit Unions of BC, Sylvan learning methods, Life bank and Shenyun performances. From 8:20pm came to another three minutes’ news and followed by two minutes’ weather report. Now it was 8:25pm and was, of course, the ad time turn--two minutes with four items
including Sylvan learning (repeated), Chevrolet car, a kind of glass window and Burning fund (repeated). From 8:27pm to 8:35pm, they gave out eight minutes’ news which was a little bit longer than previous news time
except the first one; and then came to ad again and I stopped counting. The total advertising time is eight minutes including 12 items and two of them were repeated during this 37 minutes program. Not too bad? It is
acceptable in current commercial era. Otherwise, it has a nice name called commercial culture.

I watched the x-weighted program, and I was shocked by the quantity of ads.During the program the ads popped up;I counted 23ads during the 45 minutes;there were ads every 15 min.for 5 min.2of them were repeated ,and they varied from shampoo, medications, food, and electronics.Because the show was about how to lose weight, lots of ads were about medications which help how to lose weight in a few months.Another ads was about shampoo by Garnier. The ad portrayed a young lady which had a healthy hair after washed it with Garnier shampoo because it contained some kinds of fruit and some vitamins. After this ad,it was followed by Rice Krispies cereal;which introduced a girl and her mom made easter eggs, dipped in chocolate.Eventhough ads distract our attention, they impressed us to believe that their productions have good quantity and is useful.
